This month we are so happy to have a window installation by artist Sam Cortez.
BIO
Samu Cortez is a queer Mexican artist and educator living and working in the Bay Area. They received a BFA from the University of Delaware in 2011 and a MFA in sculpture from Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 2013. They co-founded Aguas Migrantes, a Bay Area art collective that runs summer art projects and cultural trueques (a traditional and authentic form of exchange) in Mexico. Their work aims to reflect the constant exchange/struggles between the self. Identity is a constant theme along with cultural reintegration and rediscovery. They aim to unlearn systems and processes of self-forming to open new paths towards the traditional practices and processes of their own indigenuity.
Samu Cortez es un artista y educador mexicane que vive y trabaja en el Área de la Bahía. Recibió una Licenciatura de la Universidad de Delaware en 2011 y una Maestría en escultura de Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis en 2013. Samu es uno de los Co-fundadores de Aguas Migrantes, un colectivo de arte del Área de la Bahía que ejecuta proyectos de arte y trueques culturales (una forma tradicional y auténtica de intercambio) durante los veranos en México. Su trabajo refleja el constante intercambio y luchas entre sí mismo. La identidad es un tema constante junto con la reintegración y el redescubrimiento cultural. Tiene como propósito el desaprender sistemas y procesos de autoformación para abrir nuevos caminos hacia las prácticas y procesos tradicionales de su propio indigenismo.

Historias & Recuerdos ( Stories & Memories)
In this piece I invite people to share a memory of a loved one who has transcended but who left an important teaching and/or memory on the participant. I invite the audience to leave offerings to honor ourselves, our planet, the space and our ancestors. This piece aims to give tribute to stories especially at this moment in time when many cultures including my own, honor the ancestors who aren’t physically present but who live in our hearts through the stories we tell and the memories we hold.
The window display will include a table with different offerings such as flowers, water, fruits, etc. Guests are encouraged to write stories or memories of their loved ones and hang them on the twine using clothespins.
En esta obra invitó a las personas a compartir un recuerdo de un ser querido que ha trascendido pero que dejó una enseñanza o recuerdo importante en el participante. Invitó a la audiencia a dejar ofrendas para honrarnos a nosotros mismos, a nuestro planeta, al espacio y a nuestros ancestros. Esta pieza tiene como objetivo rendir homenaje a las historias, especialmente en este momento en el que muchas culturas, incluyendo la mía, honran a los antepasados que no están físicamente presentes pero que viven en nuestros corazones a través de las historias que contamos y los recuerdos que guardamos.
En mostrados cuenta con una mesa con diferentes ofrendas como flores, agua, frutas, etc. Se les invita a los presentes a escribir historias o recuerdos de sus seres queridos y colgarlos en las cuerdas usando las pinzas para colgar ropa.
